June Sketchbook Gallery
A review of the last few weeks in my sketchbooks.

Here in the U.S. we are turning a corner on summer. The temperatures have gotten very hot and we are approaching the Fourth of July - America’s annual celebration of independence. Over the last decade, fewer and fewer of us have reason to celebrate. Regardless of the politics, this still feels like our midsummer.
I am grateful to have my sketch practice for the mental stretch and the community that comes with it. Here is a look at my last month of sketching.

Color Swatches and Charts
I tried a few different types of exercises recently. Here I did some random color mixes and made them triads with either white or buff.
I watched a video from Lynsay Green about building a palette and exploring how colors interact with each other. I tried the exercise in my own way in one of my big sketchbooks.

Here’s a link to the video:
En Plein Air
I’ve had a bunch of days sketching outside. It takes a different set of coordination skills, but I’m settling into it.

Artists in the Garden - sketching with friends at the Green Bay Botanical Garden

The Marys
So I guess she gets her own section now. I’m obsessed with how Americans display her - it’s all very kitsch.

A year ago I wrote this post about building my art practice and backing into sketchbooks.
A few months later I published my first Sketchbook Gallery
I facilitate Artists in the Garden, a partnership between The Art Garage and the Green Bay Botanical Garden, Tuesdays 4p-6p. Free to attend. BYO supplies.
Ways you can support my work. 👇🏻
Purchase a copy of my photo zine, Genuine Curiosity. I have seven different volumes available on my website, and locally at Lion’s Mouth Bookstore and The Art Garage.
Shop my Blick Art Materials WISH LIST for me! I use a lot of supplies in my daily art practice and even a few colored pencils go a long way to keep me working and improving my skills. This is a list of some of the items I use most often or would like to add to my practice. 🫶🏻
Buy a paid subscription to this Substack. All of my content is free for anyone. A paid subscription helps me pay photo and zine printing costs.
Repost this article/gallery for others to see.
