February/March Sketchbook Gallery
A review of the last few weeks in my sketchbooks.
For the best experience, I recommend viewing these images on a device larger than a phone.
Some of the images below are uploaded in pairs or groups. Depending on how you are viewing this post, you may need to tap on each tile to see the complete image.
If you happen to keep up on my posts, you already know that I’ve bemoaned my inability to maintain my practice for the last several weeks because of an infection that spiraled a bit and kept me away from my studio. (If not, I wrote a little bit about it in my last Field Notes Gallery.) I’ve finally turned the corner on all that and over the weekend I dusted and straitened my studio and got my gouache paints wet.
Even without access to my studio I have some early February sketches to share and I managed to do some doodling while I recovered that at least kept my brain in a creative space.
I took a deep-dive into yellow hues of gouache and spent some time making color charts to see how they behave. Acquiring all of these happened accidentally over many months. I don’t even know how LOL! When I buy acrylics, it’s always blues and greens that I go overboard with.
For Februllage we put out loads of collage materials at The Art Garage Weekly Sketch nights. I missed the last two weeks of it, but here are collages I made early on. I used to do a lot more collage work and honestly, I think it was because I had limited drawing and painting skills. Picking up the glue stick now and then is worth while as it helps me build composition skills.

Back in January I shared a lot of sketches of vintage televisions. I only have a few this time, but it’s something that I intend to pick up again now that I’m back at work.

Gratuitous sketch of a My Little Pony - the same one I got for a birthday as a kid.

A while back I did a quick ugly sketch of a Virgin Mary in a tub. The idea didn’t quite stick at the time, but I’ve circled back to it and started practicing again.

The Recovery Sketchbook
At our New Year’s Eve Weekly Sketch, Lindsay at The Art Garage gifted all of the attendees a small sketchbook. I filled the pages of mine while sitting with my leg elevated day after day during my recovery. It fit nicely on a simple clip board, though I was limited on space and only kept five different markers near me to doodle my way through the healing. Here are some of those doodles:

I facilitate a Weekly Sketch night at The Art Garage, Wednesdays 5p-8p. Free to attend. BYO supplies and snacks. It’s a safe space and everyone is welcome.
If you enjoy my posts, consider supporting my work by purchasing a copy of my photo zine, Genuine Curiosity. I have six different volumes available on my website, and locally at Lion’s Mouth Bookstore and The Art Garage.

Glad to hear you’re feeling better. Sometimes our bodies decide we need a break.
